The firehouse got its nickname because it is located on Bingle Road.

History of the Houston Fire Department

Houston Fire Department (HFD), covering 654 square miles in Harris County (Texas) including the areas of Afton Oaks, Alief, Braenurn, Briar Forest, Briar Meadow, Brunswick Lakes, Brunswick Meadows, Clear Lake, Collingham, Crestmont Park, Ellington, Fondren Gardens, Forrest Park, Fort Bend, Greater Inwood, Greenway, Holloway Heights, Hunters Creek Village, Minnetex, Myrtle, Spring Ranch, Spring Valley, Ridgegate, River Oaks, South Acres, Southbelt, Upper Kirby, Westbury, Westchase, West Little York, Webster, Westview, Wichester & Woodlake.

Houston Fire Department is the third largest fire department in the United States, and the fourth largest city in the United States.

Houston Fire Department was established in 1838 as a bucket brigade, the Protection Company # 1, all-volunteer fire department. In 1852 Liberty Fire Company # 2 was organized. Liberty #2’s first engine was a hand engine which was purchased in Boston, MA. At that time it cost $2,000, Liberty # 2 had the first steam engine in 1856. The first Hook and Ladder Company # 1 was organized in 1858, it too was a homemade truck. 

History of Station 50

Station 50 was located originally at Southerland and Hempstead Hwy replacing Fairbanks V.F.D. in 1956. It was relocated to Bingle Road in 1960. In 2003, Station 50 was remodeled and reopened.
